CLASSIC STYLE - ARTIST STATEMENT
I grew up surrounded by cars. My dad worked as a salesman for Nissan Motors of Boston in the 1980s, and he often brought home a Nissan 300ZX Turbo sports car, a young kid's dream. We used to go on weekend trips to Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut, to watch the famous actor and race car driver Paul Newman compete in the Trans-Am Series. I would capture pictures of the race cars using my father's Pentax 35mm camera. While studying graphic design at Northeastern University, I started taking photos of classic cars in a graphic style, starting with small black and white formats and later moving on to color in medium and large format.
This series of photos represents the many summers I spent attending local classic car cruise nights and car shows. I use the frame to create solid graphic images focusing on the car's details, clean lines, and bold colors. I am fascinated by the factory details and the custom details the owners add to make their vehicles unique. From custom paint schemes to ornamental decorations, these cars have a personality. The vehicles featured in my photos span from the 1930s to the 1960s, when American automobiles were considered rolling works of art.
